Introduction
The incumbent will be responsible for the management and development of the cryopreservation laboratory and related services, for the management and development of novel products laboratory and related services, and other laboratory production processes required. To support the development and/or adoption of cellular therapies in South Africa. To be responsible for the management and accreditation of the cryopreservation laboratory, the production laboratory and related services. To develop enabling technologies with the necessary training, mentorship and support programs. In addition, the development of people including to recognized certification levels. To run the cellular therapy and novel products laboratories.

Key Performance Areas
KPA 1: Strategic Business Planning & Implementation Relating to Cellular Therapies and Novel Products
1.1. Manage, maintain and improve the cryopreservation laboratory and related service products.

1.2. Compile and analyse cellular data and adjust experimental designs.
1.3. Develop a business plan for the laboratories aligned with the SANBS Mission and Vision, with supporting budget and resource requirements.
1.4. Comply with legislative requirements and maintain quality standards in line with the international standard for Cellular Therapies.
1.5. Complete departmental scorecard in line with the cellular therapies and novel products and services business plan and monitor progress and take corrective action where required.
1.6. Collaborate and integrate functions with other teams within Cellular Therapy and Novel Products department.
1.7. Strategic planning for expansion of services.
1.8. 1o synergise integrated outcomes relevant to cellular therapies, novel products and services.
1.9. Monitor budget expenditure and ensure targets and deadlines are met.
1.10. Maintain quality management accreditation of the laboratories.
1.11.Collaborate with other departments in SANBS (such as the Research and Development, Quality Control, Genetics, Information Systems).
1.12. Participate in design of prospective research trial.
1.13. Initiate and motivate process cost effectiveness as per business plan.
KPA 2: Quality Assurance and Compliance to Standards of Practice, Policies, Procedures and Protocols
2.1 Implement and maintain national and international accreditation standards in laboratories.
2.2 Be responsible for laboratory adherence to SANBS Quality Management Policies and Procedures.
2.3 Ensure laboratories managed adhere to best regulatory practice in the absence of national regulation.
2.4 Benchmark best practice and propose standard updates to Senior Manager Translational Research and Cellular Therapy.
2.5 Develop standards of practice for all laboratory services.
2.6 Comply with SANBS overall quality management system requirements.
2.7 Comply with risk register requirements.
KPA 3: Improve integral processes
3.1 Develop novel product and services-to-market processes in collaboration with Senior Manager Translational Research and Cellular Therapy.

3.3 Propose potential projects, obtain approval, implement and monitor the effectiveness thereof.

KPA 4:Customer and Stakeholder Relationship Building
4.1 Map and identify key stakeholders in the cellular therapies, cell and tissue processing and manipulation environment.
4.2 Establish a stakeholder relations schedule to build and maintain key stakeholder relations.
4.3 Represent SANBS in consortiums for the establishment of new cellular therapy products and services.
4.4 Represent SANBS in the consortium for the development of a cell therapy research and development production facility.
4.5 Provide input into the appropriate Marketing and Communication strategy for phased implementation of new products and services and strategic relationships.
4.6 Leverage Information Technology in line with the SANBS digitalisation strategy.
KPA 5:Aligned people Management KPIs
5.1 Recruit the appropriate team to run the laboratories in line with the employment equity targets of the SANBS.
5.2 Create development plans for staff.
5.3 Conduct performance management and monitor performance on on-going basis through mentoring, coaching, and reviews.
5.4 Advise and mentor individual team members of performance improvement tactics following performance management process.
5.5 Track and encourage individual development by identifying learning and development needs and encourage attendance of relevant programmes.
5.6 Respond to grievances, conflict and disciplinary issues and take appropriate actions in accordance with SANBS policy to mitigate.
5.7 Effectively communicate any changes to strategy, values, SOPs, policy, to team and clarify any misunderstandings.
5.8 Monitor and track staff time-keeping, absenteeism trends, overtime worked and leave to ensure adherence to HR policy for cost-effective running of the department.
5.9 Promote team interrelations through regular team building exercises.
5.10 Design an intern program and mentor and coach successful interns.
KPA 6: Conducting Research that leads to Innovative Implementation of Solutions.
6.1 Participate and contribute to cutting- edge research in the field of Cellular Therapies and Novel products.
6.2 Responsible to maintain own personal development plan that leads to continuous development, improvement and expansion on knowledge and skills.
6.3 Assist in the establishment of a portal for innovation that will ensure execution and implementation of viable ideas from SANBS employees or stakeholders.
6.4 Represent SANBS in national and international working groups’ activities and presentations.

Minimum requirements
Education
- PhD in cell biology or stem cell biology or tissue engineering or a related discipline registered with the HPCSA, OR MBChB, FCP Haematopathology / equivalent HPCSA registration, OR MBChB with laboratory experience and HPCSA registration.
Experience and knowledge requirements
- Clinical management of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and the management of related laboratory teams, including but not limited to cryopreservation and flow cytometry.
- Experience in the growth and culture of human cells.
- Experience in quality systems implementation and relevant accreditations, including but not limited to those related to cGLP, cGMP and GCTP (Good Gene, Cellular, and Tissue-based Products Manufacturing Practice).
- Experience in the establishment of new laboratories
- Management and development of a laboratory team.
Other (knowledge and skills)
- Previous experience in a large organisation and working with multiple departments will be beneficial.
- Participation in relevant professional societies.
- Understanding of programmes, procedures and policies relating to cellular therapies.
- International practices and benchmarking.
